Brazilian club Vasco da Gama have announced the arrival of French attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet on a free transfer, with the former Marseille man being handed the number 10 shirt.

The 36-year-old has made the move to Rio de Janeiro after leaving Les Phocéens one year before his contract was due to expire, at the end of last season.

The former French international spent eight seasons with the club over two spells, making a total of 326 appearances during which he scored 78 goals and registered 95 assists. He notably led the team to the Europa League final in 2018, and scored 16 goals in all competitions in the 2021/22 season. However, last year, his playing time had decreased drastically under then-hea coach Igor Tudor.

Vasco da Gama indicate that the former Nantes, Saint-Étienne and Lille man will touch down in Brazil in the coming days in order to undergo his medical and put pen to paper on a contract with his new club.
