FC Barcelona have officially confirmed that young left-back Gerard Martin has signed a new contract with the club that will keep him there until the summer of 2028.

The 22-year-old’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of the ongoing season but an agreement over a new deal had already been a few weeks back. And the announcement has now been made.

“FC Barcelona and Gerard Martín have reached an agreement to extend the player’s contract with the club until 30 June 2028,” the club statement read.

“The defender put pen to paper on Thursday at midday in the presence of Barça president Joan Laporta, the director responsible for youth football Joan Soler, sporting director Anderson Luis de Souza (Deco) and the director for youth football José Ramon Alexanco.”

Martin’s new contract will run until the summer of 2028 and comes with improved wages and a higher release clause amount, reportedly set at €100 million, although the club’s statement has not confirmed that.

Martin has firmly established himself as the understudy to Alejandro Balde in the left-back position in Hansi Flick’s setup this season after making an impression during pre-season.

The 22-year-old, who joined Barcelona in 2023 from UE Cornella and spent the last season with Barça Atletic, has made 18 senior appearances this term, registering two assists.

For the time being, the left-back will remain registered with the reserve team without being given a first-team number.
