Lyon have tonight announced that Cameroonian forward Karl Toko Ekambi has completed a move to Abha FC in Saudi Arabia, in a deal worth an initial base fee of €1.5m, which could rise to €2m including bonuses.
The former Angers man leaves Les Gones in the wake of a half-year loan spell at Rennes in the latter half of last season, following a somewhat public falling out with his parent club and supporters. He notably insinuated that there was a specific reason that Lyon fans had been targeting him with abuse:
“Strangely, those who are targeted aren’t those from Lyon. I won’t say the strong word that I’m thinking of, but there you go… It’s always the same profiles who are targeted.”
He would go on to score five goals in all competitions for the Bretons. The 30-year-old, who initially arrived at Lyon from Villarreal, scored 38 goals over his two and a half campaigns with Lyon. He had previously come up through the ranks at Paris FC in his hometown, and then broke out at Sochaux and then Angers before his move to Spain.
