Friday’s Première Ligue playoff final was the last time we see Eugénie Le Sommer (35) in an Olympique Lyonnais Féminin shirt.
In a heartfelt video on Wednesday, the record goalscorer and captain of the French women’s national team announced that she is leaving the club after 15 happy and successful years.
“OL isn’t just a club; it’s an identity, a DNA, and a source of pride, and for 15 seasons I have worn this badge with the desire to honour it at every training session and every game,” Le Sommer said in her message.
She has been a part of Lyon since 2010, joining them from Stade Briochin, where she played her first three seasons as a professional.
At Lyon, Le Sommer played a massive part in this side’s incredible dominance, capturing 33 trophies, including eight Women’s Champions League titles, and she was a primary reason why.
Meanwhile, Le Sommer has also helped them claim 13 top-flight trophies and was the best striker in that competition on three occasions. The joint top-goalscorer in their 2011-12 Champions League title-winning season turns 36 on Sunday.
PSG star Marie-Antoinette Katoto (26) has been linked to a move to Lyon, and that, along with Le Sommer’s lack of starts under manager Joe Montemurro, appears to have both factored into her decision. It’s unclear whether she will retire at some point this summer or seek another club.
On Friday, her Lyon side will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Première Ligue playoff final. Earlier this week, Le Sommer scored the opening goal in their 4-1 semi-final victory over Dijon FCO.
Le Sommer is hoping to feature for Les Bleues this summer when they feature at the Women’s Euros in Switzerland.
