An interesting official Newcastle United reveal on what we can expect in this summer transfer market.

Summer 2024 saw United amongst a group of clubs that had to bring in money before 30 June 2024, the end of the financial year, to bring them back inside PSR three year limits on losses.

A flurry of early Premier League clubs’ outgoing deals included two major ones from Newcastle United.

Yankuba Minteh sold to Brighton for a reported £33m. Whilst United joined certain other PSR pressured clubs in doing a double deal with another in that grouping, Elliot Anderson moving to Forest for £35m and in return NUFC paying £20m for Odysseas Vlachodimos, a double deal that helped both clubs get the rise side of the line where PSR was concerned.

Newcastle United have done the really hard yards when it comes to PSR, the essential investment that was needed in the playing squad after a decade and a half of Mike Ashley neglect, has then been by mainly necessity, followed by the last thee transfer windows not a single new face coming in to compete for a first team place. Only the odd new squad player coming in.

Interesting then to see Eddie Howe happy to be so open at his pre-Brighton match press conference.

The Head Coach making clear that the hunted were now intending to be the hunters.

Newcastle United now under no PSR pressure to sell any player(s) by the end of June 2025, with them instead looking to get deals done themselves in terms of incoming deals, looking especially to take advantage of those clubs with immediate PSR pressures who need to bring in significant cash in these next eight weeks, or else face the prospect of having points deducted.

Last summer became a total pain for Newcastle United fans as the Marc Guehi saga ended up without having a conclusion, many weeks of bids knocked back by Palace and the summer 2024 transfer window ended in total frustration without a major signing.

What a massive boost it would be if this time by the end of June, Eddie Howe and Newcastle United have one or more new first team players already signed up before we even get into July. Allowing them to have a full pre-season and the chance to fully integrate and get up to speed with the demands of playing for Eddie Howe.

Eddie Howe talking ahead of the summer transfer market and especially the impact PSR could make – 2 May 2025:

“The PSR deadline plays a huge role for clubs.

“Both those clubs with PSR issues and those without…because those without may potentially look to try to sign players.

“They [the Newcastle United owners] will look to take advantage of other clubs, as clubs did to us last year, quite rightly.

“It is a really interesting dynamic and one that we are really aware of and that we will try to use to our advantage if we can.

“I can’t go into the details of that…but no doubt we have got people at the club who are working very hard behind the scenes on it.

“We want to keep our best players.

“I think I have made that very clear.

“That is not just the wish from me.

“That is the wish from everyone at the club.

“I don’t have a crystal ball.

“I can’t sit here and say what is going to happen [for sure].

“I can only say what my determination is and that is to build a team, the best team possible.
