The Slovakian international will join Bochum on a three-year deal that will see his contract valid until 2026. Bero was the dream signing for head coach Thomas Letsch who had worked with the midfielder during his two-year spell on the sidelines with Vitesse before being named as the new Bochum boss last September.
“Matúš Bero combines many things that help our team: An internationally experienced player who has his qualities between the penalty areas and is looking for a finish himself. Thomas Letsch knows about his qualities, which Matúš Bero has already demonstrated as a leading player,” said Bochum technical director Marc Lettau.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be moving to Bochum and the Bundesliga,” commented Matúš Bero. “For me it’s the next level in my career. I’m happy and proud at the same time that such a traditional club as VfL Bochum is interested in me and my skills. I can’t wait to get to know the team and especially the stadium. I haven’t been there live yet, but the unbelievable atmosphere and energy from the fans could already be felt in the broadcasts. I am looking forward.”
It is a move that will end a five-year spell in the Netherlands for Bero who was given the club captaincy for Vitesse by Letsch. In 172 appearances for the Dutch side, Bero scored a total of 27 goals while collecting 20 assists.
Bero becomes the sixth summer signing for Der Blau as they look to build upon their survival last season. The notable names to join Bero are Felix Passlack, who joins the club on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund, and Moritz-Broni Kwarteng, who joins for €1.10m from Magdeburg.
