The youngest of German football’s Dardai brothers has committed to play for the Hungarian national football team. VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Bence Dardai has opted to follow the lead of elder brothers Palko and Marton. All three sons of three-time Hertha BSC trainer Pal Dardai – all of whom played under their father in the 2. Bundesliga last season – now belong to the Magyars.
Like Palko and Marton, Bence represented Germany at youth level. Palko featured for the Germany U20s and has been capped once for Hungary. Marton switched to Hungary in January 2024 and has since earned 11 caps. Marton rose all the way to Antonio di Salvo’s Germany U21s and was considered for the senior German national team. Bence scored the winning penalty that helped the Germany U17s win the 2023 U17 European Championship.
Bence is the only brother to leave Hertha BSC for a different German football club, switching to Wolfsburg on a free last summer. He’s done well in his inaugural Bundesliga campaign, scoring one goal and registering three assists in 12 league appearances for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Autostädter.
”We have known about his potential for a long time,” Hungarian national team head-coach Marco Rossi noted in a statement released by the Hungarian FA. “But we wanted to give him time to fit in well with his new team and, as a young player, to make this difficult and extremely responsible decision calmly and with confidence.”
“I’m very happy to be part of the Hungarian national team,” Bence himself added. “Of course, I’m also looking forward to the first home game, because I’ve heard from my brothers that there’s always a fantastic atmosphere for the national team at the Puskás Arena.”
