It has almost become a yearly tradition that at this time of the year the speculation begins to swirl surrounding the future of Bernardo Silva. We have seen that throughout Bernardo’s time at Manchester City. But this summer may be different. Recent comments from Bernardo Silva give the impression that he wants to remain at Manchester City beyond this season. Looking at the role Bernardo fills as one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted players there is a massive role for him to play in City’s rebuild. The hope is that he remains at City to play a key role as a senior player for next season.
In an interview with Manchester City’s official YouTube channel, Bernardo Silva was asked if he could’ve envisioned all of the success that has been achieved at Manchester City during his time at the club. The Portuguese international also added that he hopes there is more to come. Speaking on the subject Bernardo explained: “Of course not, I’m going to be honest. I wanted to win a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, but never thought, specifically, that in seven years I’d win six Premier Leagues. The journey has been crazy, and hopefully, it doesn’t stop here.”
We will see key contributors to Manchester City’s recent success depart the club this summer. That’s part of the cycle of football and it will be sad to see club legends depart Manchester City. But it has to be done, as this season has shown that Pep Guardiola’s side has reached the end of their most recent era of dominance. So club heroes will depart and new players will arrive. But there is a role for several of Manchester City’s older players in City’s rebuild. Their leadership will be required to show Manchester City’s new signings the Pep Guardiola and Manchester City way. One of those players is Bernardo Silva.
Bernardo Silva has been and remains one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted players. He has played in a variety of roles for his team and no role has been beneath the Portuguese international. That’s a credit to Bernardo and the way he has gone about his work at Manchester City. His skillset will still be needed in a rebuilt Manchester City side.
We got a glimpse of that during Manchester City’s 2-all draw with Brighton last Saturday. When Bernardo came on in the 56th minute of Saturday’s match his team needed to regain control of the game. Brighton had taken control of the match, and Pep Guardiola’s side needed to regain a foothold in the game. Bernardo’s introduction helped City do that before he was substituted 18 minutes later due to injury. Looking ahead to next season you can see him playing a similar role for Pep Guardiola next season. In truth, the role Bernardo plays and could play could be crucial in Manchester City’s rebuild.
It does appear that the yearly cycle that surrounds Bernardo Silva’s future may be a non-starter this time around. His recent comments give the impression that he wishes to remain at Manchester City for next season. There is a role for Bernardo to play in Manchester City’s rebuild. So it could be for the best that he stays at the club for next season to provide leadership for Manchester City’s new arrivals and younger players for next season.
