Poya Asbaghi has been confirmed as the new Barnsley boss and his first task is a tough one as they look to get a result at high-flying Fulham this weekend.

The trip to Craven Cottage is one of eight games before January, so the former Goteborg chief has to prioritise results in the short-term to help the Tykes out of the relegation zone.

However, there’s no denying Asbaghi will already have one eye on the winter window.

And, one man who could be the ideal first arrival is Manchester United’s Anthony Elanga.

The 19-year-old has understandably struggled for first-team chances this season given the quality ahead of him at Old Trafford, with his only minutes aside from a brief run out in the cup, coming for the U23s.

So, you would imagine the Red Devils would be open to letting him leave temporarily and whilst there are sure to be more attractive suitors than a relegation-threatened Championship side, the Asbaghi factor could make the difference for Barnsley.

That’s because he has worked with Elanga for the Sweden U21 international team, and he has managed to get the versatile forward firing, with the teenager hitting six goals in their seven Euro Qualifying campaign games.

All big clubs know the risks that come with loaning out a youngster, so they take time over these decisions, but key figures at Old Trafford will see that Asbaghi can develop Elanga’s game from their time with the national team.

From Barnsley’s perspective, the new manager is aware of the quality the player has, and with the team having found the net just 12 times, the second lowest in the league, it’s clear that attacking reinforcements will be the priority.

Asbaghi has a massive job on his hands at Oakwell and he will be determined to get more out of the current group.

But, January is going to be pivotal and some major signings will need to be made. Elanga would fit into that category and a six-month spell at Oakwell could benefit all parties.
