AC Milan are certainly taking their time with hiring a new sporting director, but this is not necessarily a bad thing by any means.

Making an appointment like the one Milan must make this summer cannot be rushed, and so far, it is not being. However, the Rossoneri certainly have not had much of a say in this process, as we wrote about recently.

Nevertheless, there is still a need to be patient, considering how important a sporting director is. Essentially, the appointed candidate will be responsible for deciding the direction of the project in the next few years, and this involves what the club do in the mercato and even the style of football played.

So, there is a need to assess everything to ensure that everything follows suit, and the Diavolo have done this so far, and are seemingly coming to the end, with an appointment in mind. So, Franco Ordine has had a look at the past few months, and Milan News have his words.

“I read about the Roman meeting between Furlani and Tare with very different indications, one from the other: there are those who claim that the choice is practically made and those who instead still have some uncertainties.

“At this point, I draw a line and come to my own conclusions. Not even the choice of a pope, during a Conclave, took so long. It is true: the chosen one would have been Berta, but they arrived late, Arsenal had moved early. Then, guiltily, they bet on Paratici and here, beyond any pathetic denial, I had to take note that there was energetic pressure from the federcalcio inspired by some powerful councillors, but the basic error remains, committed by those who are ignorant of football and the relative rules.

“They all knew that with a disqualification on his back, it would be impossible for Paratici to play the role of shadow sporting director pending the 20 July deadline. He probably did it somewhere else, but in Serie B he might not have bothered anyone, especially Marotta who did not deny the annoyance or even better (‘I’d be p****d off’ is the textual expression) the precise mood with which he would welcome the former collaborator from the Samp and Juventus days.

“There is only one explanation for such a delay in the final choice: the chosen one, at the moment, is still tied to some club. And here the only trace may lead to D’Amico (or to Sartori) as Atalanta have just announced the arrival of a manager trusted by Percassi’s American partner who used to play the same role. We shall see.

“Certainly, with all this time spent, one conclusion can already be reached: dear Furlani, he can no longer make the next move wrong. And not even the coach’s next one. I also read from the rumours filtered from the Roman meeting with Tare that the profiles of Allegri and Italiano would be on the table.

“One is a free agent with a glorious career behind him, motivated to the max by the traumatic conclusion of the relationship with Juve, the other is the protagonist of a season, the umpteenth it must be said, of great stylistic importance and results, he is doing better than Thiago Motta to put it bluntly. They are expressions of two completely different visions of football.

“One, Max, is the magnificent manager of the resources at his disposal; he is able to find everyone the right place, and in particular has the reputation of always offering very concrete football. The current Bologna coach, on the other hand, is an avowed ‘player’, capable of combining results with a very offensive style.

“In short, they are two completely different paths. Instead, I believe that at some point, given the characteristics of the current squad, it will be essential to make a precise choice. I would like to add that for my part, in addition to the head coach, whatever choice is made, we should also add a liaison officer between the Milan offices and Milanello.”
