After drawing 1-1 in the away leg a week prior, Rafael Benítez's side were initially left stunned by the visitors as Abou Diaby fired them in front inside the opening 15 minutes, but fresh off signing a new contract with the Reds, Sami Hyypiä headed Liverpool back on level terms shortly after.

A Fernando Torres stunner in the second half was cancelled out by a Theo Walcott-inspired equaliser from Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor, but two late goals from Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel ensured the Reds progressed with a 5-3 win on aggregate.

In a year when the Champions League knockout stages were dominated by Premier League teams, Liverpool narrowly lost out to Chelsea in the semi-finals, with the trophy ultimately won by Manchester United on penalties after an all-English final in Moscow.
