Manchester United took advantage of the winter transfer window to loan out several promising academy stars.
Midfielder Dan Gore was sent to Rotherham United for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
Gore made his debut for the Millers in the 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City.
He came on as a substitute in the first half after an injury to Mallik Wilks.
Despite the loss, the 20-year-old left a mark by delivering a stunning assist with a perfectly timed cross for Sam Nomber.
The expectations rose for Gore but he ruled himself out of the next game against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.
The decision left Millers boss Steve Evans frustrated and in disbelief.
According to Paul Davis, Gore has suffered a foot injury and will be out for weeks.
This setback is a crushing blow for the talented midfielder, who had been eager to make up for a difficult 12 months filled with injuries.
He was sent on loan last January to Port Vale.
He played for them once and suffered an injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season.
He then suffered a freakish shoulder injury last summer which delayed his return.
The opportunity at Rotherham was for him to make up for the lost time but it looks like that bad luck has found the young star.
The timeline of his injury will confirm if he will return to Carrington or stay with the Millers.
Gore was once considered above Toby Collyer in the pecking order but the latter has now firmly earned a place in the first-team.
Kobbie Mainoo plays regularly for both the club and country.
Fingers crossed, Gore will regain his fitness soon and showcase the raw talent that once had him on the brink of a breakthrough.
It is another bad news for United after Lisandro Martinez suffered cruciate knee ligaments injury earlier this month.
