‘Outstanding’ Ten Hag signing ‘could seek’ summer exit to boost World Cup 2026 chances

Manchester United are preparing for a mass overhaul to raise as many transfer funds as possible this summer.
The prospect of no European football next season is now almost nailed on for the Red Devils unless they win the Europa League, where they take on Olympique Lyonnais in the quarter-finals.
As such, a reduced squad won’t be seen as a significant concern for Ruben Amorim, given the lack of fixture congestion he’ll have to accommodate.
Amongst the host of Reds facing uncertain futures at Old Trafford is Altay Bayindir, who joined on deadline day 2023 in a £4.1 million deal from Fenerbahce.

When the shot-stopper signed in the same window as £47.9m acquisition Andre Onana, he’d have been well aware that he was brought in to play second fiddle to the new No.1. However, he was still used more sparingly than fans anticipated under Erik ten Hag, featuring only twice in the entirety of his tenure.
Amorim, meanwhile, has called upon Bayindir four times thus far, which would’ve been more had he not been sidelined with an injury since February. His most notable game for United also came under Amorim in an FA Cup third-round victory over Arsenal at the Emirates; the goalkeeper saved a penalty from Martin Odegaard in regular time before also denying Kai Havertz in the subsequent shootout. He was then hailed for his ‘absolutely outstanding’ showing by Alan Shearer shortly after.
With reports now suggesting United are on the hunt for a new No.1 entirely, it confirms Bayindir has never truly been viewed as the heir to Onana’s throne. The Cameroonian’s lengthy catalogue of costly howlers has prompted Amorim to push for a new successor between the sticks, but Bayindir isn’t even in the frame as an option.
He isn’t allowing the situation to dampen his spirits, though, and is instead considering a summer exit from the club in hopes of playing a prominent role for his native Turkey at next year’s World Cup.
In a new report released by Manchester Evening News today, Samuel Luckhurst revealed: “There is uncertainty over the future of goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who could seek regular football to increase his chances of starting for Turkey at the World Cup next year. United head coach Ruben Amorim also wants to recruit a new ‘keeper.”
