Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League, having won five of their opening six matches in the competition.

The Reds are a point clear of Arsenal and Manchester City and have put on a number of impressive displays, including a 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Liverpool’s last league game saw them take on a struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers side, and Arne Slot’s team left the Molineux with all three points despite a mixed performance.

Recent results have caused lots of debate about whether Liverpool can genuinely challenge for the title and now a former Manchester United icon has had his say on the Reds’ title chances.

Gary Neville doesn’t think Liverpool will compete

Despite Slot’s side currently being top of the table, former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, doesn’t think that Liverpool will be genuine title contenders this season.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, he said: “They're going to have a good season it looks like and maybe get Champions League football.”

Neville doesn’t think that this impressive start for the Reds will translate into a Premier League title though.

“I didn't feel like I was watching title winners [at Wolves] being honest with you. They're well below Arsenal and City but I don't think that's shocking anybody.”

Liverpool have started the season well considering they have a new head coach and, as Slot spends more time on the training pitch with the squad, the Reds’ performances are likely to improve even further.

Scholes disagrees with his former teammate

Before the game against Wolves, Paul Scholes had shared his views on Liverpool’s title chances.

The 49-year-old doesn’t share the same mindset as Neville and backed the Reds to be involved in the title race this season.

It isn’t just Scholes and Neville who are divide on whether Liverpool can challenge for the league title this year.

We asked out followers on X, formerly known as Twitter, whether they think Liverpool are title contenders.

It is still early in the season, and Slot has played down talk of a title challenge so far, but if Liverpool can maintain this good form and continue to get the best out of players such as Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, then the Premier League trophy could be heading back to Anfield.
