Morocco and France will meet in the World Cup semi-final after seeing off Portugal and England respectively in Saturday’s quarter-finals.

The deadlock was broken in that game by an incredible leap from Morocco’s Youssef En-Nesyri which left Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa and defender Rúben Dias floundering.

Ronaldo came off the bench in the second half and made a little bit of history by earning his 196th cap to equal the all-time men’s international record.

But the 37-year-old couldn’t inspire a Portugal comeback, and he left the field in tears at full-time.

While for Morocco, the only tears were tears of joy as they pulled off another incredible victory against the odds to march into the semi-finals.

Aurélien Tchouaméni gave Les Bleus the lead in the first half with a brilliant strike from range which had goalkeeper Jordan Pickford grasping at thin air. Not bad for his first World Cup goal.

Harry Kane’s appeal for a penalty in the first half fell on deaf ears.

But Kane’s and England’s fortunes changed when they were awarded a penalty in the second half for a clear Tchouaméni foul on Bukayo Saka.

The England captain made no mistake from 12-yards to equalise on the night, and equal Wayne Rooney’s all-time goalscoring record for the Three Lions.

Harry Maguire went agonisingly close to giving England the lead.

But just moments after Pickford had made a big save to prevent Olivier Giroud putting France back in front, Giroud did make it 2-1 when he headed home from Antoine Griezmann’s cross.

There was to be another twist as almost immediately after falling behind, England were awarded a second penalty, this time for a Theo Hernández foul on Mason Mount.

Kane stepped up again with the chance to become England’s all-time leading goalscorer.
