The knockout rounds continued on Monday as Croatia’s penalty shoot out win set up a quarter-final with Brazil after Tite’s men blew South Korea away.
Here is the story from matchday 16 at the World Cup.
It all started so well for Japan when Daizen Maeda sent their supporters wild when he scored a 43rd minute opener.
But it wasn’t long before Ivan Perišić had levelled the scores for Croatia, a goal that would send the two sides to extra time and eventually penalties.
Experienced teams sometimes find a way to win and that’s exactly how Croatia set themselves up for a quarter-final matchup with Brazil when they came through the shoot-out as victors.
It was heartbreak for Japan, who had played some excellent football and pulled off a famous victory over Spain in the final group stage game.
Despite the disappointment, Japan boss Hajime Moriyasu showed his humility with a show of heartfelt thanks to the fans who had sustained his team throughout the tournament.
Onto the Brazil game, and it was over before it had even really begun as Vinícius Júnior scored his first ever World Cup goal after just seven minutes and brought out the dancing with his celebration.
Neymar then made it two just six minute later, his penalty taking him to a total of 76 international goals, just one behind Brazil top goalscorer Pelé.
Richarlison looked pretty pleased with himself after his sublime effort gave Brazil their third, but in all seriousness, wouldn’t you?
In the second half, South Korea had their consolation from Seung-ho Paik, and what a goal it was too.
After a 4-1 win, the Brazil team went to the crowd and displayed a touching tribute to record goalscorer Pelé.
