Argentina picked up a 2-0 win over Poland to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup, as the Poles held on to guarantee their presence in the next round as well.
The situation became tense after one point, as both Mexico and Poland had the same number of points and the same goal difference as well, meaning that only yellow cards could separate them. The Poles had a better record and were on the verge of progression, until Mexico conceded a late goal to confirm their exit from the tournament.
While Leo Messi did miss a penalty, he proved vital in helping his side pick up a rather comfortable 2-0 win thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez.
Key performers
Leo Messi, 8: While Messi missed a penalty which would have made things easier for them, he put on a chance-creation masterclass and created so many opportunities for his side. On any other day, Argentina would have scored more purely because of Messi’s excellent performance.
Wojciech Szczesny, 8: Szszesny didn’t just save the penalty, but he also made a couple of other good saves to keep the scoreline respectable for Poland. At the end of it, he has proved to be Poland’s most important player of the tournament so far.
