Jonathan David recorded his 100th and 101st goal for Lille OSC as Les Dogues cruised past Stade Brestois (3-1) to leapfrog AS Monaco (at least momentarily) into third place.

The Match

Lille were fired to an early start when Edon Zhegrova’s short corner routine caused chaos in the box. The Kosovan played a quick one-two with Matias Fernandez-Pardo before curling his cross towards the goal. Benjamin André was dragged down by Julien Le Cardinal in the fray resulting in VAR advising the referee to review the incident.

A penalty was swiftly awarded to the hosts and Jonathan David stepped up to the spot. The Canadian was searching for his 100th goal as a Lille player and he duly received the honour with a clever shot into the bottom left-hand corner. In doing so he became only the third Lille player to reach a hundred goals and the first foreign player to do so.

Brest slowly grew into the game around the half-hour mark. However, they struggled to create clear chances. And it would be Lille who struck again. David sprinted towards the goal line leaving Le Cardinal to chase his shadow. The striker spotted the run of Hákon Haraldsson, to provide the Icelandic international with his first goal of the season.

Les Pirates came out in far better form in the second half with the visitors quickly halving the deficit. Mahdi Camara collected the ball on the break and fought off efforts from Lille to bring him down. The midfielder released the ball to Ludovic Ajorque who strode into the box and then slipped his shot past Lucas Chevalier.

Ajorque almost grabbed his second when he poked Romain Del Castillo’s cross towards the goalkeeper. It was clear that nerves were beginning to grow in the Stade Pierre Mauroy as Brest seemed to latch onto every mistake and quickly attack in transition. Bruno Génésio looked for control as he took off Haraldsson and Fernandez-Pardo bringing on Osame Sahraoui and Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Lille would restore the two-goal lead in the 69th minute. A poor clearance from Le Cardinal found Zhegrova. The winger fired low towards the goal forcing a block from Marco Bizot. David was the first to pounce on the ball to take the wind out of Les Pirates’ sails and return some of the confidence that had been flowing ahead of the second half.

Lucas Chevalier – 5

A really strange performance from the usually assured goalkeeper. He made a number of mistakes at the back which went unpunished, including an awful attempt to sweep up the ball where he slipped and clattered the clearance into Alexsandro. Thankfully Diakité was there to save the France international’s blushes.

The attacking midfielder recorded the second goal for Lille to give them what looked a commanding lead at half-time. However, despite his effort, he looked out of sync with his teammates. He seemed to make quite a few errors  with his positioning and decision-making which is quite easy to understand considering he has missed a significant period of time due to an injury he picked up in early September.

A brilliant performance to cap his 100th and 101st goal. The striker was influential in each of the goals and showed exactly why Europe’s elite are hungrily looking towards July 2025 when his contract with Les Dogues expires.

A nightmare evening for the centre-back. He had a part to play in all three goals that Brest conceded. His mistakes cost Brest the game and helped kill the momentum that had built in the second-half.

A good evening for the full-back. He did well defending Fernandez-Pardo and then Osame Sahraoui. He also looked good going forward. It will be a shame that Brest can’t rely on him in their upcoming Champions League fixture as he did well to replace the injured Kenny Lala.

A difficult evening for Brest. However, the midfielder’s run for the Brest’s goal was an exceptional piece of work which helped give the club the belief that they were going to come back into this match.
