Teenage prodigy Rodrigo Mora has strengthened his relationship with Portugal’s and one of the world’s most powerful and well-connected agents Jorge Mendes.
Mendes’ company Gestifute has been looking after Mora in recent months, and on Monday Polaris Sports, Gestifute’s partner company that manages the image rights of professional footballers, announced that Mora had been added to its stable.
Mendes is currently mediating in the renewal of Mora’s contract, helping negotiations between the player and his family and Porto’s board led by André Villas-Boas.
Portuguese sports paper A Bola report that a five-year extension of his current deal is on the table, which will also entail increasing the release clause from the current value of €67.5 million to close to €100 million.
Mora shone at last summer’s U17 European Championship in Cyprus, and has wasted no time in making himself a crucial part of Porto’s team, first under Vítor Bruno then new coach Martín Anselmi.
Still only 17 years old, previous coach Bruno carefully managed Mora’s minutes on the pitch, trying not to overplay the brilliant youngster. However, his sparkling performances have been the one bright spot in a hugely disappointing season for the Dragons and Anselmi has Mora him a regular starter.
The attacking midfielder has scored 6 goals and provided 3 assists in 966 minutes of football in league play. He is therefore averaging nearly one goal contribution per 90 in his debut season and has scored brilliant winning goals in each of Porto’s last two victories in the Primeira Liga.
His exceptional goal in the 1-0 win at Casa Pia on Saturday made Mora the youngest ever Porto player to score six goals in Portugal’s top flight, beating a long-standing record held by club legend Fernando Gomes.
Porto fans will be desperately hoping the young sensation opts to remain at the Estádio do Dragão for at least one more season.
