Both Frankfurt and Mönchengladbach are sailing in calm waters. The Eagles are enjoying an unusual luxury this week, but that’s by no means a guarantee of success. The lowdown on Saturday’s primetime clash.
Backdrop
Borussia Mönchengladbach were the only Bundesliga club to resist making new signings on the final day of the winter transfer window on Monday, aside from promoting academy products Noah Pesch and Niklas Swider to the first team and announcing a second transfer for next season in Nürnberg’s Jens Castrop on Sunday, following on from Kevin Diks from FC Copenhagen.
Gladbach come into this match on the back of two successive wins. The 3-0 victory at home to VfL Bochum was followed by a 2-1 win at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday, which moved them up to seventh in the table. A tough task, therefore, for Eintracht at BORUSSIA-PARK this Saturday evening (kick-off 18:30 CET). After two days off on Monday and Tuesday, the Eagles will prepare intensively for the Foals. “We’ve not won our last three games, which obviously annoys us,” said defender Nnamdi Collins. “We all have the same standard. We want to give 100% and win games.”
Looking back
The Eagles have done that more often so far in 2024/25 than in any Bundesliga campaign since the 1992/93 season. Ahead of the trip to Mönchengladbach, Dino Toppmöller’s side have earned 39 points and are third in the table. Frankfurt have already shown how to get to grips with Borussia this season, both in the reverse league fixture and in the second round of the DFB Cup, with Eintracht winning 2-0 and 2-1 at Deutsche Bank Park.
Reference from seven years ago
The last time Eintracht’s deadline-day arrival Michy Batshuayi appeared at BORUSSIA-PARK, in the battle of the Borussias with Dortmund on 18 February 2018, the Black-and-Yellows triumphed 1-0. The Belgian was in the starting line-up, Mario Götze was pulling the strings behind him and substitute Mo Dahoud helped to see out the win against his former club in the closing stages. A repeat on Saturday would be very nice indeed.
