The signing of Diant Ramaj went under the radar this January as it was made so late in the window and he was sent out on loan immediately. The former Frankfurt man joined Ajax before the 2023/24 season for a fee of €5 million according to Transfermarkt. His transfer value rose all the way up to €18 million before falling to €7. His transfer to Dortmund occurred for a reported €5 million.
Having spent only 18 months at Ajax, Ramaj experienced ups and downs at the club. After injuries to the other goalkeepers at the club, Ramaj became the starter and made 31 appearances between the Eredivisie, Conference League, Europa League and the Dutch Cup. An injury in April kept him out for the remainder of the season.
Remko Pasveer, another Ajax goalkeeper, earned the number one spot after a good preseason where he showcased his leadership ability. This led to transfer rumors where Ramaj was linked to the Premier League during the summer. No such move materialized and Dortmund swooped in for the player during the winter transfer window.
His contract until 2029 shows that the Dortmund hierarchy believes in Ramaj over the long term. The biggest question is whether he will be a starter for BVB or the 2nd goalkeeper on the team sheet. Meyer will be 34 next season and in the last year of his contract, so a number two for Dortmund is needed after 2026. Ramaj was unhappy to be the backup at Ajax and forced his way out, so who is to say he will be comfortable as backup at the Westfalenstadion?
