Reds survive an onslaught to secure a first leg advantage
Liverpool snatched victory late on against Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League last-16 first leg showdown.
The Reds head coach had Alisson Becker to thank for keeping his side in the game, though it was the Dutchman’s masterstroke of a substitution that resulted in the deadlock being broken three minutes from time.
Prior to the game, PSG manager Luis Enrique challenged his players to rise to the occasion against “one of the best teams in Europe in recent years” and he would have been delighted with the first-half performance.
A goal, or two, would have capped it off, but it wasn’t for the lack of trying.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia thought he had broken the deadlock with a stunning finish, but his celebrations were cut short as the goal was disallowed as his heel was in an offside position before receiving a pass.
Ibrahima Konate then survived a VAR check for a potential red card for what looked to be a clear push on Bradley Barcola. Replays showed contact was made just outside the area, though the Liverpool defender could have been sent-off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Alisson Becker then thwarted Ousmane Dembele and Kvaratskhelia with some fine saves before Barcola had a shot blocked, then fired the rebound over the bar as PSG couldn’t find a breakthrough before the half-time whistle.
It was more of the same after the break with Alisson proving why he’s rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the world by making a series of stunning saves, particularly from Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue, to keep PSG at bay.
Then came the pivotal moment. With Mohamed Salah not having his best game, Slot opted to bring off Liverpool’s best player this season and replace him with Harvey Elliott.
40-odd seconds later the decision paid off as Elliott found the back of the net with his very first touch to secure a smash and grab victory for the Reds as they take a one-goal advantage to Anfield for next week’s second leg.
