PSG vs. Inter: A Kit Battle

Article image:PSG vs. Inter: A Kit Battle

We’re hyped for what should be one of the best UEFA Champions League finals in recent memory. But instead of previewing what’s to come on the pitch, let’s dive into which club has the best kits: Inter Milan or Paris Saint-Germain?

This is the holy grail of club football. The one everyone wants to win. PSG and Inter have secured their place in the UEFA Champions League final, with the French giants looking to win their first and the Italians on the hunt for their fourth win. Both teams are at the height of their game, too, which is good news for the neutral.

Inter have been one of the best teams in Europe over the last few years, competing for a second straight Scudetto and in their second UCL final in three years. An all-time semifinal tie with Barcelona has the Nerrazurri flying high into the title match.

On the other hand, PSG have moved away from their model of superstar hoarding, exchanging the likes of Neymar, Messi, and Mbappe for Barcola, Doue, and Kvaratskhelia. The devastating front three is matched by an assured midfield that has withstood tough matchups against Arsenal and Liverpool in the knockout rounds.

Luis Enrique and Simone Inzaghi will be hoping to carry this approach into the final and both of them will be sure to try and tactically out think the other.

That’s not what matters here, though. We’re here for the kits. And more importantly — who has the better portfolio? Both teams are renowned for beautiful jerseys, which makes this Champions League final even more interesting. Which club will come out on top, though? Let’s find out…

Now, quickly before we start — Inter have already competed in a Kit Battle here on Urban Pitch when we pitted them against Serie A rivals, Napoli. I’ve picked five different kits to keep it fun…

This kit is SPECIAL. And could sway the entire vote right out of the bat (but you’ll have to wait ‘til the end to find that out). George Weah and David Ginola played for PSG during this title-winning season, and when a man as good-looking as Ginola wears a kit like this it becomes a bit of a masterpiece.

It takes a classic approach, with the blue and red down the middle. But on this kit, the red is fragmented into different stripes and combined with some of the most football hipster-looking sponsors out there. The Nike Sportswear logo finishes it off, making this shirt a streetwear aficionado’s grail. You’ll probably see the cool kids wearing it around the local gentrified area.

I love this shirt. The template Nike used this year was wonderful because it was so simple yet so classy. And it’s a shirt that truly epitomizes how much Inter benefit from their colors, too. The black and blue stripes can make a lot of simple shirts look 10 times better than other clubs can. The fit of this shirt is beautiful, with the raised neckline. It’s a heater of a shirt, and while they didn’t win the Champions League this year, it’ll be looked back on with fondness among the Inter fans and the kit community.

PSG 2001-02 Home

This makes PSG’s list because of one man: Ronaldinho. Yep, Nicolas Anelka, Jay-Jay Okocha, Mikel Arteta, and Mauricio Pochettino all wore this shirt, too, but it’s truly synonymous with the Brazilian. PSG won nothing of note in this kit, but it’s a classic due to the talent that wore it. Before his big break to Barcelona, ‘Dinho was cutting about in what was to become the “coolest club in the world” (not in my eyes, by the way).

Inter fans are screaming at me about including this kit, but sorry, it’s in here for aesthetic reasons rather than meaning. Inter finished fifth in Serie A this year and exited the Coppa Italia in the round of 16. Walter Mazzarri was their coach and it is safe to say, this Inter side wasn’t great. We’re well and truly in the Inter banter era, here, but the kit is lovely. It’s a lot darker than normal, with the blue being muted. Regardless, the stripes haven’t been messed with and it features a classic collar. Throw in the Pirelli sponsor and you’ve got the recipe you need for a good Inter shirt.

When you search this one online, there are tons of versions. Many with different sponsors on it, some without any. But what is standard is that delightful ’90s Nike collar with the Sportswear logo in the middle of it. And when you add in PSG’s colors and iconic Hechter stripe, it’s an instant classic. It’s baggy, typical of its time, and features cuffs on the sleeves that make the long-sleeve version even more incredible. Wow.

Inter 2005-06 Away

This shirt features one of the best Inter badges you’ll see. Maybe I’m being nostalgic, as this was a kit from when I was 9 years old, but I stand by it. The white kit with the black and blue hoop across the middle, combined with the yellow Pirelli sponsor, is just a delight. The fact that Adriano wore it, too, makes it a football purist’s dream.

Inter won the Coppa Italia the season before, which meant they got to wear that cool-looking shield on their shirt, too. In fact, they won it again this season and would have won the double if it wasn’t for that pesky Calciopoli scandal, but we won’t get into that now…

PSG 2018-19 Third

The first-ever Air Jordan football shirt. I had to include it, didn’t I? This was the most hyped kit release I think the game has ever seen and it delivered. A black base and the Jordan logo make the Jumpan debut stand out. It’s sleek, so sleek in fact, that it got the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid wearing it to a game at the Parc des Princes. As I said earlier, “coolest club in the world.” Apparently.

This kit will most certainly split opinion but I think it’s one of those kits that is ’90s enough without being too out there. It’s an Umbro classic, with a fragmented pattern diagonally across the chest and shoulders. Combined with the collar, the kit looks quite smart. It’s a solid design and I entirely regret selling mine on eBay a few years back…

PSG 1991-92 Home

The 1991-92 home shirt for PSG is an interesting one because it’s not blue and red as you’d expect, it’s primarily white. And what makes it even more interesting is that across the body is a red and blue graphic of the Eiffel Tower. I love it. Whether you hate it or love it, you can’t deny it’s interesting and deserves to be part of the conversation.

Inter 1996-97 Third

Finishing on this kit because Inter will wear a remake of this design in the Champions League final. Yellow and black, it’s definitive of the ’90s Umbro era and will split opinion. I’m in the camp of being a fan, probably because I am a sucker for a yellow and black combination. The collar is superb and it’s one you’d expect to see worn by the older guy down at five-a-side who’s elusively cool and who has an encyclopedic knowledge of Italia ’90.

Winner: PSG

If you pitted the five same kits that we put against Napoli in Inter’s previous kit battle, I’d have said Inter win it. But putting these five against PSG’s five in this piece and you just can’t choose anyone else other than PSG. And that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, Inter fans…
