Sporting Clube de Lisbon are interested in signing yet another Coventry City star.
According to The Telegraph, the Portuguese club are monitoring Joel Latibeaudiere ahead of the summer transfer window.
The defender has been an important part of Mark Robins’ side this season as they target another play-off place.
The Sky Blues reached the play-off final last year, but lost to Luton Town on penalties.
This led to key players like Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres departing, with Sporting signing the Swedish forward in a deal worth a reported €20 (£17.1) million.
Carlton Palmer believes that failure to gain promotion to the Premier League this season will make it difficult to convince the centre-back to stay at the CBS Arena.
He has praised Latibeaudiere’s performances this year, claiming he has been key to their promotion push.
Speaking exclusively to FLW, Palmer said: “Coventry City defender Joel Latibeaudiere is being watched by Sporting Lisbon and Ajax,”
“Sporting Lisbon are very keen to take the player, having seen the success in signing Gyokeres.
“Joel is under contract at Coventry City until the summer of 2027.
“Sporting, and other Premier League, and other Portuguese and Spanish clubs, have been keeping tabs on the player.
“They are convinced that the 24-year-old can step up from Coventry.
“Coventry are four points outside the play-off spots, with a game in hand, and also have got the FA Cup semi-final coming up against Manchester United.
“They won’t be in a financial position of having to sell, having received money from Gyokeres and Hamer, they’re not in a position where they have to sell, but obviously the opportunity to play at that level will be something that Joel will be interested in.
“But, who knows, Coventry will hopefully get a play-off spot and will have the chance to get promoted.
“Should they not get promoted then it will be an unsettling summer for Mark Robins, trying to convince Joel to be committed to staying with Coventry in the Championship.
“I’m sure Mark Robins and Coventry will do all they can to keep Joel, who has been instrumental in another very good season for Coventry, despite losing the likes of Gyokeres and Hamer.”
Latibeaudiere signed for Coventry last summer from Swansea City in a deal worth around £500,000.
This has proven to be one of the smartest signings of the season, with the 24-year-old earning a lot of praise for his performances in Robins’ side.
A move to Sporting could prove very lucrative for the Championship side, who could make a significant profit if he is sold.
However, it remains to be seen what kind of fee could tempt the Sky Blues into a sale.
Latibeaudiere’s contract runs until the summer of 2027, meaning Coventry should have a strong negotiating position if clubs show concrete interest in the upcoming transfer window.
Given he was signed for around £500,000, there is an opportunity to make a huge profit on the player.
Latibeaudiere could be worth north of £5 million, so Coventry will have to weigh up his importance to the squad against how useful that kind of money could be to improving the team as a whole.
Promotion is looking like a mammoth task at this stage, but it is not out of the realm of possibility, so that could determine whether he stays or goes this summer.
