Aaron Ramsdale has said Southampton ‘haven’t been good enough all season’ after the club’s ‘inevitable’ relegation was confirmed.
Southampton’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed after a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Brennan Johnson’s double put the North Londoners in control, before Matheus Franca’s goal gave the Saints a late lifeline. However, Spurs struck again through Mathys Tel’s penalty to claim the points.
Defeat confirmed Southampton’s relegation with seven games still to go, the earliest a side has ever been relegated in Premier League history. It’s been a torrid season for the Saints, who have won just twice.
Southampton goalkeeper Ramsdale reflected on their drop into the second tier and admitted it has felt ‘inevitable’ at St Mary’s for some time.
“We knew it was probably going to be inevitable at some point, we haven’t been good enough all season. We were dominated by the better team. We dug in in the second half but it is a sad day and one that this group of players will learn from,” he said to Sky Sports.
“Some are experiencing relegation for the first time so there will be a lot of emotions from them over the next few days. The lads who have been here before, we have to try and pick the young boys up. This group did incredible things last season. Nobody will want to jump ship with seven games to go. We are tight and we have just got to pull each other through now.”
