Yesterday’s Bundesliga fixture between RB Leipzig and Holstein Kiel featured a horrific mid-air collision between RB keeper Peter Gulacsi and Kiel defender David Zec. The two players collided while contesting an aerial duel in the 63rd minute. The game was delayed for several minutes whilst Gulacsi and Zec appeared to lose consciousness after banging their heads together. The pair were both replaced in the 67th minute.
Afterwards, the clubs provided updates on their injured players. Concussions were confirmed. In his post match interview with Sky Germany, RB sporting director Marcel Schäfer admitted that his heart “stopped for a moment” after the incident. Schäfer also revealed that Gulacsi was en route to the hospital. Later, the club confirmed that Gulacsi received stitches for an open wound near his right ear.
“Pete was briefly unconscious and taken to hospital,” RB interim head coach Zsolt Löw added at the post match press conference. “He spoke briefly on the phone with our goalkeeping coach, which is a good sign, but we need further tests to make sure that everything is okay and that he has no lasting damage.“
“David is in the locker room and responsive,” Kiel head coach Marcel Rapp added when it was time to address the status of his player at the press conference. “He’s concussed and was briefly unconscious, but is doing well so far. He will be out for a time.“
