Real Madrid are reportedly looking to sign Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, according to recent news from Independent.

The 18-year-old talent made his debut under manager Mauricio Pochettino last season and has quickly caught the eye of several top clubs, including Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United.

The outlet mentions that Real Madrid are exploring the possibility of acquiring Acheampong in January, viewing him as a viable short-term solution for the right-back position and a promising option for their defensive lineup in the future.

The club has maintained interest in Acheampong for some time, but recent injuries to key players, such as Dani Carvajal and backup centre-back Joan Martinez, have prompted them to rethink their plans.

Real Madrid have a place for Acheampong

Carvajal’s injury has created a pressing need for reinforcements in the squad, particularly in the right-back area.

Additionally, Martinez’s unfortunate ACL injury, which will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season, has intensified the urgency for Real Madrid to strengthen their defensive options.

Although the club is also considering a move for Trent Alexander-Arnold when his contract expires this summer, they are cautious about making any commitments that could further impact Carvajal’s recovery.

The management at Real Madrid is currently evaluating the financial implications of signing Alexander-Arnold, especially considering his substantial wage demands.

Careful consideration

They are also contemplating whether to pursue a more defensively-minded right-back to achieve better balance in their team.

Meanwhile, Chelsea remain firm in their belief that Acheampong is a vital part of their future plans, as his contract runs until the summer of 2026.

Even though he has not featured prominently in the first team yet, Chelsea views him as a significant asset for the club’s development.

As the January transfer window approaches, it will be interesting to see how Real Madrid explore their options and whether they will make a move for Acheampong.

His youth and potential make him an attractive prospect, but Chelsea’s intentions to retain him complicate matters.
