A leading member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid is considered the frontrunner for the next African Player of the Year prize.

That’s according to Diario AS, who point towards Brahim Díaz as the player in question.

Brahim is for his part of course fresh off a stellar campaign on the books of the aforementioned Real Madrid.

Afforded what was initially considered a surprise place back in the first-team setup of Carlo Ancelotti, the 24-year-old wasted little time in silencing his many doubters.

Carving out a place for himself as something of a super-sub in Real’s squad (albeit with 18 La Liga starts to show for his efforts), Brahim dazzled, en route to a career-best haul of 12 goals and nine assists in all competitions.

And with such exploits having proven central in his club clinching glory in both La Liga and the Champions League, the former AC Milan man could well soon be rewarded, from an individual standpoint.

That’s according to AS, who report that: ‘Brahim is ‘the favourite for the African Ballon d’Or, an award that has never been won by a Real Madrid player’.

The attacking midfielder now qualifies for the CAF Player of the Year accolade, after switching international allegiance from Spain to Morocco earlier in the year.

It now remains to be seen if he can stave off competition from the likes of Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen, to ultimately bag the award.
