Real Madrid starlet Arda Guler is not one to let sleeping dogs lie, and after a back and forth with Liverpool‘s Dominik Szoboszlai, continued their spat on Monday afternoon. The two had clashed during Turkiye’s win over Hungary in a Nations League promotion/relegation play-off in Budapest.

The Turkish side came into the game with a 3-1 advantage from the first leg on home soil, for which Guler was suspended. However he played a key role in the second leg as Turkiye cruised to a 3-0 win in the second leg, sealing a comfortable 6-1 aggregate win over their Ottoman rivals. During the game, Guler was seen telling Szoboszlai to be quiet with a finger to his lips. After the match, Guler noted that the Hungarian side tried to impose themselves physically by fouling the Turkish players, but his side would not be intimidated.

After the game, a picture of Guler’s gesture to Szoboszlai was posted on Instagram, with the Liverpool playmaker commenting ‘1088’, referencing the number of minutes that Guler has played this season for Real Madrid. It is a sensitive topic for the Turkish wonderkid, who is reportedly close to asking for a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, due to his lack of game time.

Guler himself responded to Szoboszlai with his own Instagram story, featuring a picture of the incident in the match captioned ‘This guy is a joke. Isn’t 6 goals enough to shut you up?’

Certainly Guler will feel he had the last laugh. His future at Real Madrid is in serious doubt though, with Carlo Ancelotti reportedly unimpressed with his attitude of late, feeling he is not working hard or smart enough. The 20-year-old has had a tough spell since joining Real Madrid, initially characterised by injury, but since regaining fitness in February of 2024, has struggled for a consistent run of games.
