Real Salt Lake’s Bobby Wood will be out for two to three months after undergoing left adductor surgery to help release a related nerve, the club announced.
Wood has become an integral part of the team since joining Real Salt Lake from Germany’s Hamburger SV last summer. He’s contributed three goals and one assist in 14 games so far this season, inspiring the team to second place on the Western Conference table and Supporters’ Shield standings.
The forward also formed part of the RSL squad that managed the stunning 2021 postseason run, reaching the Western Conference finals as underdogs before ultimately losing 2-0 to the Portland Timbers.
Now, he joins Damir Kreilach on the sidelines as the midfielder recovers also from surgery.
Without Wood in the starting 11, head coach Pablo Mastroeni is expected to use Ecuador international Sergio Cordova and Guatemala international Rubio Rubin together in the attack moving forward. Mastroeni tested the two in RSL’s match against the Crew on Saturday, resulting in a 0-0.
Jonathan Menendez replaced Rubin in the 66th minute after the forward managed just one shot on target.
