A recent report from SPORT has revealed the reasoning behind Vitor Roque’s decision to return to Brazil. The young forward aims to reignite his career and strengthen his chances of making the Brazilian squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Initially, Roque wanted to finish the season with Real Betis before making any major career decisions.

However, in January, his agent, Andre Cury, presented him with an offer from Palmeiras. At first, he was hesitant to return to the Brasileirao just a year after leaving Athletico Paranaense.

Palmeiras were determined

Palmeiras, however, remained persistent. The club assured him that he would not just be another addition to the squad but a key figure in their ambitious and competitive project.

He received multiple calls from Abel Ferreira, the club’s coach, who outlined the important role planned for him.

The first major obstacle was financial. Roque’s family was concerned about losing the earnings he had secured under his seven-year contract with Barcelona, which guaranteed him a net annual salary of €1.7 million.

His agent then explained Palmeiras’ offer—a five-year contract with an initial gross salary of €2.5 million, ultimately making it more lucrative than his Barcelona deal.

Meanwhile, his playing time at Betis significantly decreased. With the arrival of Cucho Hernandez, he not only lost his starting position but also found himself used sparingly. This decline in prominence further pushed him towards considering Palmeiras’ offer.

Palmeiras pushed and pushed

Palmeiras wanted his commitment quickly, aiming to bring him in during the special transfer window opening on June 1 for the FIFA Club World Cup. They convinced him that they would give him the perfect stage to revive his career.

The club, coaching staff, and fans were eager to see him as a key figure in their campaign. After thorough reflection, Roque decided to accept Palmeiras’ offer.

There were tense moments of negotiation, but by Thursday night, an agreement was reached. The deal was finalised on Friday and the closing of the transfer market in Brazil.

His move to Palmeiras became official, marking the most expensive transfer ever completed by a South American club.
