Werder Bremen halted their five-game losing streak with a stunning 2-0 win over defending champions Bayer Leverkusen. The Green and Whites goalkeeper Michael Zetterer played his part with his saves maintaining the slender lead before they sealed the points with an injury-time strike.

“Maybe they underestimated us a little bit. Their minds were elsewhere,” said Zetterer referring to Leverkusen’s Champions League tie against Bayern Munich. “We wanted to take advantage of the opportunity, and we did exactly that.”

The 29-year-old goalkeeper had a difficult week following his mistake in the home defeat to VfL Wolfsburg. "We wanted to show a reaction. I, especially, wanted to show a reaction. I take the blame for last week's defeat. I'm very happy that I was able to pay it back a little today.”

Although he doesn’t want it to be seen as an excuse, Zetterer was fighting with illness before the game against Wolfsburg. Ole Werner praised the performance of his goalkeeper after the game. "He was there at the right moments. And, like the team, showed a good reaction," said Werder’s coach.

Meanwhile, it’s now the turn of Mitchell Weiser to apologize for his actions. However, the former Bayern player isn’t doing that to Bremen fans. After his challenge had seen Florian Wirtz off injured, the 30-year-old sent his heartfelt apology to the youngster.

“I thought I intercepted Flo's pass to poke the ball away. I'm sorry, that's a foul. I was even lucky that it wasn't a red card," Weiser admitted after the game. “Flo is my guy. I know him. I'm deeply sorry. And, I hope it's not that bad.”
