Remembering Phil O’Donnell – 17 years ago today saw us lose not only a great footballer but a great man at the age of just 35…

That man was Phil O’Donnell, who sadly passed away after collapsing at Fir Park while playing for Motherwell leaving behind a wife and four young children.

He was  of course a Motherwell legend having played 144 games for the Steelmen over two spells and of course was part of their famous 1991 Scottish cup winning side, scoring one of the goals in a memorable 4-3 victory over Dundee United.

And Phil also had a very special place in the heart of the Celtic supporters having played 121 games for the club in a five year spell. Phil indeed became our record signing back in 1994 when Tommy Burns signed him from Motherwell for a sum of £1.75 million.

He scored a double on his debut against Partick Thistle at Firhill and instantly became a fans favourite. Phil had his injury problems, but he still contributed massively to our football club.

Phil was a member of our Scottish cup winning side in 1995 (our first trophy in six years) and he of course played his part in the side who stopped the dreaded ten in 1998. Phil’s efforts will always have a special place in our hearts and he will always be fondly remembered by everyone connected to Celtic football club, and of course everyone at Motherwell FC too.

Phil O’Donnell, gone but never forgotten.
