Jorge Sampaoli has officially been appointed as Rennes head coach on Monday. This Tuesday, the experienced Argentine manager faced the media at Roazhon Park alongside Sporting director Frederic Massara and club president Arnaud Pouille. In a press conference attended by Get French Football News, the Ligue 1 club’s executives spoke at length on the reasons why Sampaoli was seen as the right fit to replace Julien Stéphan.
“We’re delighted to welcome Jorge”, Pouille said. “We looked at who could best match with Stade Rennais. We firmly believe Jorge is the best choice to take over a professional squad which has suffered recently.” The former RC Lens CEO believes Sampaoli’s “love for the game” will be shared by the Rennes players, considering most of them are badly struggling this season. Rennes are 13th in the standings after losing six of their 11 Ligue 1 games so far.
Massara adds that Sampaoli immediately convinced him and Rennes’ higher-ups through his ideas, experience, and “the sheer enthusiasm with which he welcomed our project.” The former AC Milan Sporting director also underlines that Sampaoli will be backed in the upcoming winter transfer window. “If there is a need to intervene to progress quickly, the ownership supports the coach. »
