Over the past week, reports have surfaced claiming that Real Madrid have taken an interest in former La Fabrica talent Alvaro Carreras, who currently plies his trade at SL Benfica.

The 21-year-old left-back left Real Madrid for Manchester United in 2020 before ending up in Portugal in January earlier this year.

In his short time with Benfica, Alvaro has made a big impression, putting clubs like Real Madrid, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Manchester United on alert.

However, now, according to a report from Portuguese outlet Record, despite the possibility of a return to Manchester United, Alvaro Carreras would prefer moving back to Real Madrid.

It must be noted that the Premier League giants have a buyback clause for the 21-year-old left-back, which is said to be worth around €20 million.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Under-21 international has a general release clause in his contract with Benfica worth €50 million.

As per the report, if he were on the move, Alvaro would prefer joining Real Madrid over Manchester United, while Benfica, too, would likely stand to gain from such a move as they are pointing at his €50 million release clause for interested parties.

However, as things stand, it is simply out of the question that Real Madrid will shell out such a sum for a new left-back.

After all, Real Madrid have Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia in their ranks. Even in the case of wanting to sign a left-back, the Merengues could land Alphonso Davies – a more experienced and proven talent – for free with his Bayern Munich contract expiring in 2025.

So, while Real Madrid might have monitored Alvaro’s performances at Benfica, the likelihood of any move transpiring in the near future seems extremely distant.
