Gian Piero Gasperini could depart Atalanta in the summer a year before the end of his contract, which he won’t extend, and Roma have started kicking the tires on him. Claudio Ranieri is a glorified caretaker manager and will become an executive at the end of the year.
According to Il Messaggero (via Calciomercato), the Bergamaschi gaffer is very high on the Giallorossi list. They consider him ideal for their current state and their long-term project. They’d prefer to hire somebody experienced who could handle the pressure of a passionate city.
In addition to Roma, Gasperini is on the radar of Napoli, if Conte somehow decided to leave, and Genoa, where he spent a good chunk of his career, although the Rossoblù turned things around with Patrick Vieira in the dugout. Moreover, the boss was courted by the Saudi Pro League in the past.
According to Sky, the Giallorossi owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, will personally make the final call after hearing Ranieri’s advice. The governors love to appoint big names. They inquired about Ajax’s Francesco Farioli, but he won’t be the choice.
Cesc Fabregas has also been attached to the job opening, but it’ll be very challenging to lure him away from Como anytime soon.
He might still change his mind and stay on board for another campaign despite heavily hinting at his departure. It could have been just a misdirection to take the pressure off the team after disappointing results. It’s not a lock that his methods will translate well to another side given his peculiar, controlling, and abrasive character.
