As Manchester United await the impending arrival of Matheus Cunha to undergo his medical, they’re getting to work on some equally significant outgoings.

One being Marcus Rashford, 27, who bid farewell to Aston Villa and their supporters with a message on social media on Monday, seemingly making it clear that he won’t be returning to Villa Park after the summer break.

The Midlands outfit had the option of signing him permanently for £40 million, although Rashford himself would’ve also had to green-light the deal, which reports have suggested he hasn’t.

As a result, we’re back at the stage of the forward’s future being uncertain.

There is no expectation that he will play a competitive game for United again, even if he is tied to the club until 2028 while earning £325,000 per week.

Such wages are certain to deter a host of his suitors when he opens negotiations over potential moves in the coming weeks, not least Barcelona, who’re notorious for constantly navigating a precarious financial situation.

A move to the La Liga giants – now also the reigning champions of Spain – has been deemed something of a dream move for Rashford, and it’s not that far out of the realm of possibility that it actually comes to fruition.

The Blaugrana are preparing to offload the likes of Ansu Fati from their books to free up funds allocated to player wages, which could well pave the way for Rashford, whom Erik ten Hag once hailed as ‘unstoppable’ when in his best form, to join Hansi Flick’s ranks from the 2025/2026 campaign — assuming he accepts to take a pay-cut, that is.

This afternoon, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed (following Toni Juanmarti’s report) that Barcelona are getting the wheels in motion over a deal for Rashford. He said on X/Twitter: “Marcus Rashford will be available for all clubs for £40m.

“He remained on Barça shortlist since January when a deal didn’t happen as no sale took place. His camp met with Barcelona again today.”

Any fee United recuperate from Rashford’s sale will generate pure profit, given he’s a homegrown talent who’s spent 20 years of his career as a Red.
