The Red Devils captain is frequently touted as the only major success story the club have had in the transfer market since the retirement of iconic manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Fernandes joined United from Sporting in January 2020 for around £50million and has since scored 91 goals while registering 79 assists in 275 appearances, winning the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup along the way.

While sometimes a divisive figure, the 30-year-old remains a key part of the project under Amorim. No one has scored more goals for the club this season (12), nor have any of his teammates registered more assists (13).

Fernandes scored a clever free-kick as United drew 1-1 with Arsenal on Sunday, taking advantage of a Gunners wall who had dropped 11.2 yards behind the set-piece rather than the usual ten.

Amorim believes Fernandes sets an example, not only due to his quality. The player’s suitability as a captain has often been questioned but the United boss believes he is exactly the type of character the club need going forward as they no doubt prepare to rebuild again.

“Any coach when he wants to bring players he expects the best but sometimes they have to adapt and sometimes you have luck with the character of the player or not,” he said.

“Even with all the investigations we do before signing players. What I can say is we need more Brunos, that is clear. Not just the quality and the character, he makes some mistakes but in this league the availability is so important and he is so decisive with and without the ball.”
