Mohamed Salah’s ongoing contract saga has taken another twist, with the Liverpool star labelling Jamie Carragher as “obsessed” amid rising speculation over his future at Anfield. The Egyptian, whose current deal runs out at the end of the season, hasn’t held back in expressing his frustrations about the club’s apparent lack of urgency to secure his signature for the coming years.
Carragher, a Liverpool legend turned pundit, has not been shy in his critique of Salah’s handling of the situation. Earlier this season, he branded Salah “selfish” for airing his grievances publicly. During his latest appearance on Monday Night Football, Carragher suggested that both Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold should take inspiration from Virgil van Dijk’s calm and composed approach during contract discussions.

Salah, never one to let a comment slide, hit back on social media platform X, stating, “I’m starting to think you’re obsessed with me.” In a light-hearted yet pointed reply, Carragher tweeted: “I’ve always been obsessed with you. Hopefully, that obsession will continue next season.”
While Salah and Alexander-Arnold’s futures remain uncertain, van Dijk has stood out as a beacon of professionalism. Despite his own contract nearing its expiry, the Dutchman has kept his cards close to his chest, maintaining a composed demeanour both on and off the pitch.
Speaking about van Dijk, Carragher said: “I would say Virgil van Dijk has come out of this whole situation, as the captain of the club, in a higher esteem for me. The way he’s conducted himself, his performances on the pitch, the way he’s led the team. He hasn’t got involved in too much around this.”
The former defender added, “Rather than speak about Trent Alexander-Arnold or Mo Salah, I’d probably like to pay tribute to Virgil van Dijk. He’s come across as a real statesman the way he’s handled it. He’s been asked questions, he’s knocked it away. He’s here to win the league, he wants to do his utmost for Liverpool. Fingers crossed he signs.”
As rumours swirl about Salah potentially leaving Liverpool, his social media activity only adds fuel to the fire. Earlier in the day, he posted an Instagram photo featuring himself, van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold, which some interpreted as a cryptic nod to their shared contract situations.
Carragher’s pointed remarks suggest he believes Salah and Alexander-Arnold could benefit from van Dijk’s statesmanlike conduct. He concluded with a final piece of advice: “The other two could maybe look at Virgil van Dijk and take a leaf out of his book.”
With the January transfer window approaching, Liverpool fans will be eager for clarity. Will Salah commit to another chapter at Anfield, or will the club face losing one of its modern icons? One thing is clear: Carragher will be watching closely.
