Samba Diawara failed in his mission to keep Stade de Reims in Ligue 1. Les Stadistes will feature in Ligue 2 next season following their relegation play-off defeat to FC Metz (4-2).
Diawara was promoted internally following the sacking of Luka Elsner earlier in the campaign. His appointment did not turn fortunes, instead, Reims slipped closer and closer to the relegation zone before Le Havre AC’s dramatic late winner against RC Strasbourg Alsace on the final day of the season ensured that Reims would contest the dreaded relegation play-off.
Despite drawing 1-1 away in the first leg, they then lost 3-1 at home to Les Grenats on Thursday. Whilst the club’s president Jean-Pierre Caillot stated post-match that Diawara retained the club’s support, L’Équipe understands that the manager could yet leave his post.
As per the publication, he doesn’t have an “overflowing desire” to remain in the post beyond the end of the season.
