Back in April, Marcel Schäfer left his position as Wolfsburg's managing director for sport ahead of taking up a similar role at RB Leipzig in August.

When RB Leipzig approached him, Schäfer told the chairman of the supervisory board "in an open and honest conversation at a very early stage".

Nevertheless, the decision sparked anger in the Autostadt.

"There were certain reactions towards me and my family that clearly crossed the line," Schäfer, who used to play for the club, told Sport1.

Schäfer, who spent 17 years with Wolfsburg, doesn't want a public spat with his former employers.

“I am very grateful and will continue to keep my fingers crossed for the club, because it was an extraordinary 17 years for me.”

Explaining his decision to leave Wolfsburg, the 40-year-old said:

“After almost seven years, it was time for me to say, because we had two less good years, that maybe this club or I needed a new impetus.”
