Sergio Rico (31) has played his first game since recovering from a near-fatal injury after he was trampled by a horse on a pilgrimage to Spain in May 2023. The former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper suffered serious head and neck trauma was induced into a coma and spent several weeks in intensive care.

In August 2023, Rico was released from the hospital and vowed that he was going to fight to return to the field. However, there was still a long path for him to recover to the point where doctors would give him the all-clear to play, which finally came in April 2024. However, Rico would not make another appearance for PSG.

The Spaniard’s contract expired in July of this year allowing him to talk to clubs as a free agent. In September, Rico agreed to join Al-Gharafa SC, where he made his debut for the Qatari club on the 1st of October, starting in the AFC Champions League victory over reigning champions Al-Ain (4-2).

Rico on his social media stated, “A return to the game and back to winning. Thank you very much to all the fans for all their support. The first victory in a long series.”
