Manchester United could soon be in need of a new back-up goalkeeper – and the club’s former shot-stopper Sergio Romero appears ready and willing to take up the role.

Lee Grant’s retirement, together with Dean Henderson’s expected loan move to Nottingham Forest, has left United perilously short of cover for David de Gea.

The 35-year-old Romero, who departed Old Trafford last summer, is once again a free agent after leaving Venezia in May and would be open to a United return, according to a source close to the player.

Per the Manchester Evening News, a pal of Romero’s declared that he ‘would always come back’ to Old Trafford if an opportunity presented itself.

Romero was frozen out by former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his final season at the club, failing to make a single appearance as the Norwegian forced him to train alone.

After six seasons of loyal service, in which he made 61 senior appearances, Romero is held in high regard by the United fanbase – and his reported comments suggest that the player still has a lot of affection for the club, too.

Having only played seven Premier League games in his United career, Romero was never a central figure at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, but then that wasn’t his role.

However, the ever-dependable Argentine did make headlines back in March 2019 when he became a Guinness World Record holder.

Alongside his then-United teammates Ander Herrera and Phil Jones, Romero attempted to break the record for the most goals scored from the half-way line in 60 seconds.

Herrera managed 14 goals, while Jones posted an impressive 19 goals. It was Romero, though, who wrote his name into the record books with an eye-watering 20 goals.

To put that number into perspective, the previous highest mark had been only five goals.

It was a herculean effort from Romero, who reflected on the toughness of the challenge afterwards, admitting “I need some water and oxygen.”

A magnificent effort, but unfortunately not one that would stand as a record for long. A little over six months after Romero claimed the record, it was beaten by fellow ‘keeper Ronald Koeman Jr, who racked up a staggering 29 goals in the 60-second timeframe. Crazy stuff!

United have yet to make a decision on who they want to be their second-choice goalkeeper next season. Romero, though, seems more than willing to discuss the opportunity if the club looks in his direction.
