Serie A president suggests Milan and Inter could ‘play abroad’ amid San Siro closure

San Siro will be closed for a month at the start of 2026 and as revealed by the Serie A president Ezio Simonelli, AC Milan and Inter could play some of their games abroad.
Milano Cortina will host the 2026 Winter Olympics and the inauguration will take place at San Siro. Seeing as it’s quite a large spectacle, weeks will be needed to prepare for the event and as a result, Milan and Inter will have to play some of their games elsewhere.
San Siro will be closed for the clubs between January 10 to February 8, a period in which the final UEFA league phase games are played. The situation is far from ideal, in other words, but the president Simonelli has suggested that it could be seen as an opportunity.
Is there a chance that Serie A matches will be played in the United States?
“There are formal steps to go through, such as asking for authorisation from UEFA, but we would like to do it. Then we have an opportunity to exploit. San Siro will be closed for a month because it will have to be prepared for the inauguration of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics.
“From January 10 to February 8, the stadium won’t be available for Inter and Milan matches. It could be an opportunity for Inter and Milan to play abroad,” he stated as cited by MilanNews.
It’s an interesting idea, especially since there have already been talks about games abroad, but it most likely won’t go down well with the locals. Stadiums nearby, which could be used instead, include Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium and Monza’s Brianteo Stadium, but the capacity is low for both.
