As expected, the Championship has been action packed over the first part of the season, with plenty of shocks and quality already being on display. Perhaps one of the shocks is how well Sheffield United have begun the campaign.
Before a ball was kicked, the Blades were at the foot of the table, starting on minus two points. With that in mind and their atrocious season in the Premier League, as well as the huge rebuilding job that they underwent in the summer, almost every neutral was predicting a struggle for the South Yorkshire club. However, that has not been the case.
Under the stewardship of manager Chris Wilder, Sheffield United have shown flashes of brilliance this season. The club’s recent results, winning four games in a row and conceding just a single goal, have sparked discussions among neutral fans and pundits about their genuine chances of clinching promotion.
Before this winning stretch, the Blades suffered back-to-back away losses to Leeds United and Middlesbrough, which put United’s promotion hopes in question. But, Wilder’s side has answered the call and truly proved their ability as well as their mental strength, to climb to second in the table.

While challenges remain, the team’s blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned experience has proven to be a potent mix. Key players like Harry Souttar, Anel Ahmedhodzic, Vinicius Souza, Oliver Arblaster and Gustavo Hamer have been instrumental, delivering consistent performances to keep the promotion dream alive.
Off the pitch, the club have been strategic this term. Signing younger players, such as Harrison Burrows, Michael Cooper, Alfie Gilchrist and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, have given them an edge over competitors in the Championship. But as every fan of the second-tier knows, the race for promotion is as much a battle of endurance as it is of skill, hence why supporters are hoping for a couple of additions in the upcoming January transfer window. Once more though, it appears as though the pending takeover could impact the type of business, if any, the Blades can do in the new year.
The Championship will definitely have more twists and turns over the coming months, which will undoubtedly shape both the relegation and promotion battle. United are in a great spot, currently, but we know that can all change in a blink of an eye.
