Chris Mepham is believed to be the subject of major interest from the Blades during the final hours of the window.

Sheffield United are pushing to try and get a deal over the line for AFC Bournemouth centre-back Chris Mepham.

This is according to Alan Nixon, who believes that the Blades should be able to sign the Cherries' defender within their budget.

Despite failing to get a takeover deal over the line at this point, Chris Wilder's side haven't been afraid to spend in the transfer market, although they have been able to use the money generated from player sales to seal some of their signings.

With United able to recruit plenty of top-quality players, they have put themselves in a good position to secure a Premier League return at the first time of asking, and Mepham could be the next signing to arrive at Bramall Lane.

The South Yorkshire side already have some promising centre-back options at their disposal, with Harry Souttar joining on loan from Leicester City.

Australia international Souttar may not have secured a decent amount of game time during his time at the King Power Stadium thus far, but he's a real asset to have in the Championship and will have a point to prove after barely featuring for the Foxes last term.

Anel Ahmedhodzic, meanwhile, is still at the club despite being linked with a move away in recent times, and the fact he has stayed up to this point is a real boost, considering he played a big part in United's previous promotion during the 2022/23 season.

Jack Robinson is also a decent option to have at this level and Alfie Gilchrist can also operate in central defence following his loan move.

One player who doesn't look set to remain at United beyond the end of the summer is Auston Trusty, who is thought to be closing in on a move to Scottish Premiership giants Celtic.

And it looks as though United are intent on bringing in a replacement for the American before the window closes later today.

United are thought to be pushing to get a deal over the line for Mepham - and Nixon believes this deal is doable within the Blades' budget.

The same journalist, writing on his Patreon, also believes that the player is prepared to take the step back down to the Championship, which is a boost for Wilder's side in this pursuit.

The Blades are hoping to use the money raised from Trusty's departure to get a deal over the line.

If the Welshman comes in, he will be yet another shrewd addition, during what has been a positive window at Bramall Lane.

Chris Mepham could be a very decent addition for Sheffield United

Mepham would be a very shrewd addition, considering the experience he has under his belt.

United already have plenty of top-quality attacking players who should help to fire the club into the top six.

However, they also need to be solid defensively and the addition of Souttar should help in that quest.

Mephem, with his experience at both a domestic and international level, could be another excellent signing.

And he already knows what it takes to win promotion, which should only help United in their quest to secure a top-flight return.
