The annals of football lore have a new inductee as Netherlands star Sherida Spitse has officially become the most-capped player in European history after being included in the Dutch XI against Austria.
Spitse, who plies her trade with Dutch giants Ajax, pulled free and clear of former record-holder Caroline Seger of Sweden (240 caps), who retired at the end of 2023.
A native of Sneek, Spitse has been ever-present for Leeuwinnen since her debut back in 2006 during a World Cup qualifying loss against England.
Since then, Spitse has scored 46 goals along the way while helping Oranje to multiple deep tournament runs in 2009 (Euro semi-finals) and 2019 (World Cup final), while also being crowned champions of Europe in 2017.
Her legend is secure.
