Selles is set to be dismissed on Thursday

Former Crystal Palace chairman and talkSPORT pundit, Simon Jordan, has reacted to the news that Ruben Selles is set to be dismissed from his position as Hull City head coach imminently.

The Tigers had a calamitous and inconsistent 2024/25 campaign in the Championship when compared to their previous position of seventh, which also led to the dismissal of Liam Rosenior 12 months ago.

Selles was appointed on December 6th ahead of a home clash with Blackburn Rovers which he watched from the stands, before taking full charge of his first game at the MKM Stadium against Watford just four days later.

City had been left inside the relegation zone following the ill-fated and extremely short reign of Tim Walter during the season's early stages, and Selles was handed a two-and-a-half-year deal by owner, Acun Ilicali, who also described the man who was poached from League One side, Reading, as his "number one target".

But, after preserving the club's status in the second-tier after a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth at Fratton Park and a high amount of uncertainty regarding the Spaniard's long-term future in East Yorkshire, it has been reported by several outlets that the hierarchy are set to dismiss yet another head coach heading into a critical off-season.

Speaking on talkSPORT's 'White and Jordan' morning show (10:27, 15/05) alongside former Sky Sports presenter, Jim White, Jordan admitted that he is somewhat surprised that Selles is set to be Ilicali's latest dismissal, which would leave the 55-year-old searching for his sixth permanent boss in just three-and-a-half years after his £30m takeover back in January 2022.

The reasoning behind the decision is said to stem from an unconvincing run of just two wins in the club's final nine games, which came away to Sheffield Wednesday and at home to fellow strugglers, Preston North End. However, it has also been claimed that no imminent replacement has been drawn up as of yet, leaving supporters in HU3 in the unknown.

When discussing the predicament alongside White, Jordan's initial response referred to Ilicali's previously bold call which was to replace Rosenior, who currently has RC Strasbourg in the box-seat for some form of European competition next season, as they sit sixth in Ligue 1 with one game remaining.

"We had Tan Kesler (former CEO) in here, and I really thought Liam Rosenior is a bright young thing (manager) and a very capable operator," he began.

"There was a lot of noise about Liam in the media, and he did a lot of observations and punditry and a lot of people were going, 'it's very easy in theory, much more difficult in practice'. I think he was the glue that held Derby together when Rooney was there, I think he did well for Derby when they got relegated, and he was unfortunate that he lost his opportunity there.

"He went to Hull, did a decent job. There was a style-of-play issue, and that's always one of those things that I think owners should be too near. Winning football matches is what you want, then building better sides that can play better football.

"I thought it was, categorically, a mistake to bring in the person that they did (Walter), and I'm surprised that Ruben Selles has fallen foul of it," Jordan stated.

"Again, he was a little bit 'all theory' when he was Southampton manager. But, I think he did a decent job at Reading.

"But, they (Hull) needed to something because they only stayed up on the last day of the season, and that's not the blueprint I imagine Acun wants with the club," he concluded.

Whilst a final-day survival mission isn't what all associated with the Tigers were hoping for back in August, many believe that it has earned Selles the opportunity to continue the rebuild.

The Valencia native accumulated 34 points from 27 games and a points-per-game total of 1.26 which, over the course of the season, would have effectively equalled Sheffield Wednesday's tally of 58 points and a 12th-place finish.

Given the job he has done with the Tigers, it's not surprising that it had previously been reported that Selles has been the subject of "concrete interest" from fellow second-tier and EFL sides, whilst those at the MKM are left to see what pans out from here, having already endured plenty of mixed fortunes in the past few years.
