Sint-Truiden have, unsurprisingly, picked up their purchase option on Japanese international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The talented young shot stopper joined the signed on loan from Urawa Reds in the summer, with a purchase option included. Most presumed this would be exercised, and after a strong first half of the season, Suzuki has established himself as a rising talent amongst Pro League goalkeepers.
The arrival and subsequent rise of the 21-year-old saw his fellow compatriot and long time number one at the club Daniel Schmidt leave in January to join Gent. So far, Suzuki has played 16 Pro League matches for the Canaries, keeping three clean sheets. While there is still work to be done on aspects of his game, the talent is clear for all to see. Prior to joining Sint-Truiden, Suzuki had been linked to Manchester United. He opted for Belgium instead to guarantee playing time.
Over the past month he has been the number one for the Japanese national team at the Asia Cup. The side are set to play their semi-final against Iran on the 3rd of February after beating Bahrain 3-1.
