According to reports in Italy, Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested Max Allegri would be ideal to replace struggling Erik ten Hag.
The Premier League side is in crisis after a run of dire results, culminating in the 1-1 Europa League draw with FC Twente and 3-0 Premier League home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
If they lose to FC Porto in Europe on Thursday and Aston Villa at the weekend, then the Dutch tactician is likely to be sacked during the break for international duty.
Allegri had already been mentioned by some sources as a potential replacement and now La Gazzetta dello Sport claim the Italian has a very special backer in this race.
They insist that Manchester United legend Ferguson has advised the club to go for the ex-Juventus boss rather than Thomas Tuchel.
The Italian is a free agent after he was sacked by Juve for a touchline blow-up with director Cristiano Giuntoli, despite it happening as Juventus won the Coppa Italia in May.
The Gazzetta also argues that the real target for Manchester United’s future is current Inter boss Simone Inzaghi, with this a potential stop-gap solution.
It’s not the first time that Allegri has been recommended to the Old Trafford side, as Patrice Evra famously said the Italian has “incredible flair. More than Ferguson. Allegri always knows how a game will go before it starts.”
